Katherine, thank you for your inquiry about my artist father, Ken Phillips’, Toronto sketches. Over his lifetime, Ken painted and drew landscapes, architectural studies, figures and still lifes, but perhaps most significant were his eloquent pictures of Toronto landscapes before they were demolished and his late oil landscapes. Over his extended noon hours from his advertising job at Simpson’s my father roamed his beloved city drawing his favourite buildings, all on heavy card, first with felt pens, but later with hand made reed pens and ink. A number of the sketches of Toronto landmarks were printed by Simpson’s and sold through them. Some were also sold in a long-gone restaurant at the top of the CN tower. I’m guessing the ones you own may be some of those. The Grange was one of his favourite haunts because of the wonderful time he had spent at what was then the Ontario College of Art, and where he met my mother, fellow artist Marie Cecilia Guard. My father was a skilful, passionate artist. There was never a time when he was not sketching. I am convinced that my parents’ art deserves more recognition, but this has been hard to accomplish. Your appreciation matters to me and I know it would have made my father happy as well.
